Unused hemlock &/or fir, joined newel post that may have minor cosmetic damage (small chips or dents, stable cracks), may be unfinished (e.g. may have material from the lathe/turning process still attached, we'll show this in photos if present). Probably paint grade, but you might use it with a stain if you put a little work into it.
