Based on the patent date of March 1878, this beautiful level could easily be nearing 150 years old! Both vials are intact and despite some wear reasonable to its age, it's in pretty great shape. It's finished with gorgeous brass hardware at the spirit vials and each end, and the wood is dense and richly toned - difficult to precisely ID through the aging, but as an educated guess we'd say likely mahogany or possibly rosewood. This level would be a real stunner after restoration, and it's at a pretty good starting point!
