Vintage Studio Art Pottery Vase

$ 45.00

A handmade stoneware vase by local ceramicist Michael McCullough (1957-2012). This piece strikes the perfect balance between geometric and organic! Its hexagonal columnar form is decorated with a tea-colored dribbles over a white base with a hint of cobalt near the base, and distinctive crazing that may be the result of a Raku-firing. During the Raku process, pieces are kiln fired to an extremely high temperature, then removed while glowing hot and transferred to a container full of combustible materials in order to produce a variety of unpredictable colors and textures once enclosed in a reduction (oxygen-starved) environment - one of the most thrilling and difficult firing processes to master! The bottom was signed by its very skilled maker, a Washington native and longtime ceramics instructor, in 2000.
