Aluminum Roof Rail

A bit of an oddball here - we have an aluminum roof rail with four 88"H posts and sixteen 88" C-channel pieces that I'm imagining encase the posts or something of that sort? The spine measures around 24-3/4' in length. I could see this being used as a starting point for a carport roof, as it does look similar to the edge of the kind of carport that would house a boat or RV.
