Vintique Folding Chair Quartet

$ 85.00

A set of four "Solid Kumfort" wooden folding chairs made by Louis Rastetter & Sons out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. They have the model number (301) printed on the underside of the chair, near the engraved maker's mark. Rastetter & Sons pivoted from steering wheels and horse-drawn carriages around the turn of the century to folding furniture, with an estimated manufacture date of sometime between the 1920s and 1930s. Many of the materials used for these were appropriated for the war effort in the '40s, and it uses only flatheaded screws which points (Phillips head screws, which became a manufacturing standard, weren't introduced or used broadly until the late 1930s). The green upholstery has seen some better days in the century or so since their manufacture, with two of the chairs definitely being worse off than the others (although the other two are in admittedly good shape for their age). Except for one chair (number 2 of 4 in the provided photos), the wood construction and steel folding mechanisms both still work like a dream, though the wood could use some light refinishing work. On the one exception, one of the brackets has lost a couple of screws. It looks like they blew out their holes, but that should be easily reparable. Nevertheless, price reflects condition.
