Second Use will hold a special collection event on Vashon Island July 14 and 15, in a joint effort with nonprofit thrift store Granny’s Attic. In an effort to gather materials in a place where it’s not as easy for people to salvage, Second Use will set up shop at Granny’s on Sunrise Ridge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The materials will go to Second Use’s retail store in Seattle, and when the items sell, Second Use and Granny’s will split the profits. Granny’s will, in turn, use its money to support the Vashon Health Center.

Acceptable items are the same at the Vashon event as they are at Second Use in Seattle– doors, windows, cabinets, plumbing, flooring, unique hardware, light fixtures, modern appliances and lumber.

Materials that Second Use cannot accept include single-pane windows, windows with broken seals, aluminum windows, hollow-core doors, non-low-flow toilets, blind-corner cabinets, hazardous materials, paint, carpet, appliances more than seven years old, and anything that is broken or incomplete.

People interested in donating materials on Vashon should call Second Use at 206-763-6929x0 and ask to speak to “receiving” to figure out whether their materials match Second Use’s acceptance guidelines.

Second Use hopes this event will only be the beginning of a longer relationship with Granny’s and the residents of Vashon.
